Nigerians across several states have expressed frustration following a recent increase in
petrol prices, a development that has led to public complaints, increased transportation
costs, and renewed debates about the country’s fuel subsidy removal policy. The price
adjustment, announced earlier this week, has affected commuters and small business
owners who rely heavily on fuel for daily activities.
The sudden rise in fuel prices has forced many commercial transport operators to increase
fares, leaving passengers with little choice but to pay more or walk long distances. In major
cities such as Lagos, Abuja, and Ibadan, long queues were seen at filling stations as
residents rushed to buy fuel before further price changes.
According to reports from national news outlets, transport unions explained that the increase
was unavoidable due to higher operational costs. Some drivers interviewed said the new fuel
price has reduced their daily profits and placed additional pressure on them to survive
economically.
Meanwhile, civil society groups have criticized the timing of the hike, noting that many
Nigerians are already struggling with inflation and rising food prices. They argue that the
government should introduce stronger social support measures to cushion the effects on
low-income earners.
Videos circulating on social media show citizens expressing anger and disappointment over
the situation. In some areas, peaceful protests were recorded as residents demanded
clearer explanations and accountability from authorities.

In response, government officials stated that the fuel price adjustment is part of ongoing
economic reforms aimed at stabilizing the energy sector.
